How does the direct deposit setup with Atomic work?
Here’s how to set up direct deposit through Atomic:
1. Provide your payroll provider log-in to Atomic.
2. Identify the amount (dollar or percentage) you want directly deposited from each paycheck into your Spruce account.
Note: Spruce becomes the highest priority account at your employer. See here for more info.
3. That’s it! The request should be effective in 1 to 2 pay periods.
How do I sign up for direct deposit manually?
To set up direct deposit for Spruce manually, follow these steps:
1. Confirm your employer or benefits provider offers direct deposit.
2. Get the Direct Deposit Form.
3. Choose how much you’d like to add into your Spending Account and send it in.
4. That’s it! You should see your money being deposited within 2 pay cycles.
What is Atomic and how is it connected to Spruce?
Spruce has partnered with Atomic to provide the option for you to use Atomic to set up direct deposit to your Spruce account. This is a separate and optional service provided by Atomic not Pathward, which provides your Spruce Spending and Savings accounts. You can find out more about how Atomic works in their Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.
What does Atomic do with my data?
Atomic will use your login credentials to link to your employer or payroll system through their encrypted connections and edit your direct deposit for you. See Atomic’s Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy for more information.
Can I split my deposit between more than one account?
Most employers and payroll systems allow you to split your direct deposit between multiple accounts by choosing either the amount or a proportion of your paycheck to deposit into each account. If your system allows it, we allow it! You can deposit all or part of your paycheck through either our Atomic partnership or a manual update. If you already have direct deposit set up with your employer, Spruce will be the highest priority in your payroll system.
How long will it take for my direct deposit setup to take effect?
It can take 1 to 2 pay periods for the change to take effect. However, this can vary by employer or payroll provider.
How do I qualify for faster direct deposit?
Early access to funds depends on the timing of the payer’s submission of the payment. These funds are generally made available to you the day the payment instruction is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the payer’s scheduled payment date.
What if I can’t find my employer or payroll provider?
There are currently over 40,000 employers supported through Atomic. If you can’t find your employer or payroll provider, Spruce provides a pre-filled PDF with the information you will need to set up your direct deposit with your employer or payroll provider. See here for more info.
Can I set up direct deposit for unemployment?
Yes. Atomic supports direct deposit changes for some state unemployment benefits.
What if I don’t remember my login credentials for my employer or payroll provider?
Most employers or payroll providers allow you to recover their login credentials through Atomic. However, some employers may require you to complete the recovery process outside of the Atomic experience.
Can I enter a percentage of the total payment or a specified amount for my direct deposit?
Yes. Not all payroll systems or employers allow a partial direct deposit switch. Some offer only a percentage, only a fixed amount, or only a total switch. However, when available, you will see the option to move either a percentage or a fixed amount of your direct deposit to Spruce.
Once direct deposit has been set up, can I change or edit my distribution preferences?
Yes, you can go through Atomic again and update the amount you have chosen to move to your Spruce account.
How can I cancel my direct deposit?
If you want to cancel a direct deposit, you will need to contact your HR department or access your payroll system directly to make this change. Atomic does not cancel direct deposits.
If I have direct deposit set up or have multiple direct deposits for my paycheck, where do the funds move from?
Setting up direct deposit to Spruce with Atomic makes Spruce your top priority account for allocations from your paycheck. Please check with your payroll provider or employer to check or update that prioritization.
If there are changes in my paycheck, how is my direct deposit affected?
If you have moved your whole paycheck or a proportion of your paycheck to Spruce, you’ll see changes in your paycheck reflected in what is deposited into your Spruce account.
If you’ve moved a set amount of your paycheck to Spruce, your deposit won’t automatically change with an income change unless your paycheck is less than the amount you set to go to Spruce.
Note: Setting up direct deposit to Spruce with Atomic typically makes Spruce your top priority account for allocations from your paycheck. Please check with your payroll provider or employer to check or update that prioritization.
