Launching Spruce

Just 12 months ago, my team at Block was sketching out on a whiteboard how we could help people be good with money. We knew that two-thirds of Americans struggle with one or more aspects of their finances, including spending, saving, and planning. And we know that even as more companies were bringing new fintech solutions to the market to address these needs, a gap remained – people were still looking for ways to access and manage their money from a brand they knew and trusted. Enter Spruce – a new mobile banking app and spending card built by H&R Block, which I’m incredibly proud to unveil today.

Our new financial technology platform has the latest features and benefits offered by leading neobanks, backed by the trust millions of Americans have put in H&R Block for more than 65 years. Our product isn’t based solely on market research. Instead, we started with what we know from serving 21 million customers every year—that these customers need help, not just at tax time, and that H&R Block is uniquely positioned to provide that help.

Spruce is focused on providing customers with transparency and accessibility, and I’m proud of what we are offering. Spruce will support customers with customizable saving goals, cash back at places many of us already shop, early funding of their paycheck, overdraft protection, credit monitoring, tax refund allocation and more.

And this is just the beginning! Like all tech companies, we will continue to iterate and advance the Spruce platform to better meet our customers’ needs, and I’m really excited about the product roadmap we have to keep adding features and functionality to Spruce. I am deeply grateful to the teams across H&R Block and our partners that have worked so hard to make Spruce a reality in an incredibly short amount of time. This is just one more way that our team has come together to deliver on Block’s Purpose, to provide help and inspire confidence in our clients and communities everywhere.
